We're here to support your creative healing journey.

If you're considering holistic art therapy, we understand you may have questions. To help you feel confident before your first session, we've put together some FAQs below.

  • 1. What is art based therapy?
Art based therapy is a gentle, creative approach to exploring thoughts, feelings, and experiences using art-making as the main tool. You don’t have to be “good” at art — it’s expression, not perfection. Through painting, drawing, collage, or other creative forms, you can discover new perspectives and release emotions in a safe, supported way.

    2. Do I need to be “good” at art to benefit from art therapy?
Not at all. Art therapy is about self-expression, not artistic skill. The focus is on the process rather than the final product — even simple marks, shapes, or colours can carry deep meaning and create insight.

    3. How does art therapy help with stress, anxiety, or trauma?
Art-making can bypass the thinking mind and tap into deeper feelings that may be hard to express in words. This process can help release tension, process difficult experiences, and promote a sense of calm, clarity, and self-understanding.

    4. What’s the difference between art therapy and traditional talk therapy?
While talk therapy focuses mainly on verbal conversation, art therapy combines dialogue with creative expression. The art process can uncover insights and emotions that words alone may not reach, making it especially helpful for processing complex or unspoken experiences.

    5. What is holistic counselling and how does it differ from standard counselling?
Holistic counselling looks at you as a whole person — mind, body, emotions, and spirit. It combines evidence-based therapeutic approaches with tools that support overall wellbeing, such as mindfulness, creative practices, and self-care strategies.

    6. How can holistic counselling support my mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing?
By addressing the root causes of challenges rather than just symptoms, holistic counselling can help you manage stress, improve relationships, boost resilience, and support a greater sense of balance in daily life.

    7. Is everything I share during sessions confidential?
Yes. Your privacy is a priority, and everything you share remains confidential unless there is a legal or safety requirement to share information.

    8. How many sessions will I need before I notice a change?
Every person’s journey is different. Some people feel a shift after the first session, while others notice changes gradually over a series of sessions. Together, we’ll review your progress and needs as we go.

    9. Can I combine art therapy with other types of therapy or medical treatment?
Absolutely. Art therapy and holistic counselling can complement medical care, allied health therapies, or other forms of counselling. I can also work collaboratively with your existing care providers if you wish.

    10. What can I expect during my first session?
We’ll start with a gentle conversation about your needs, goals, and comfort level. You’ll be introduced to the creative materials and processes, and you can decide whether you’d like to begin with art-making, sand tray therapy, talking, or a combination of both.

  • 1. What is sand tray therapy and how does it work?
Sand tray therapy uses a tray of sand and miniature figures or objects to create scenes that reflect your inner world. It allows you to explore thoughts and emotions through symbols and imagery, often revealing insights that words alone can’t express.

    2. Do I have to talk during a sand tray session?
Not if you don’t want to. You can create in silence and choose whether to share your thoughts afterwards. Sometimes, the process itself speaks louder than words.

    3. Why are miniatures and symbolic objects used in the sand tray?
Miniatures represent people, places, feelings, and experiences. Choosing and arranging them can help express complex emotions and life situations in a tangible, visual way.

    4. Is sand tray therapy only for children, or can adults benefit too?
Sand tray therapy is powerful for all ages. Adults often find it a safe, non-verbal way to explore deep emotions, inner conflicts, or memories.

    5. Can sand tray therapy help with trauma and emotional processing?
Yes. Because it is symbolic and non-invasive, sand tray therapy can help process difficult experiences at a pace that feels safe and manageable.

    6. Do I need to bring anything to a sand tray therapy session?
No, all materials are provided. Just bring yourself and an open mind.

    7. Is there a right or wrong way to create in the sand tray?
No — there are no rules. Your tray is your own creation, and it can be as simple or detailed as you wish.

    8. How is my sand tray creation interpreted?
I don’t “tell” you what your creation means. Instead, we explore it together, allowing you to discover your own insights and meanings.

    9. What should I wear for a sand tray session?
Wear something comfortable. You may be sitting, standing, or leaning over the tray, so it’s best to be at ease.

    10. Will my tray be photographed?
Yes, in confidence, for my own client session records, some clients like a photograph to reflect on later.
